Supercharged Sketchbooks with Jenni Spangler

“What’s harder to draw - a horse or a bicycle?”

We’re still buzzing from the excitement and ideas generated from this CPD session led by author and illustrator, Jenni Spangler.

In 90 minutes Jenni took a group of teachers from Carmountside Primary Academy, Ash Green Primary Academy and Burnwood Community School through a whole raft of ideas and challenges to get our drawing skills fired up.

“Sketchbooks are meant to be messy - they are not just objects, they are places that we go!”

Underlying all the different activities and games we played are some simple but profoundly freeing concepts: it’s okay to make mistakes; there are no right or wrong answers, just answers. Discussion with the teachers at the session focused on how their students are often held back by the fear of making mistakes or doing it wrong.

At the end of the session the teachers went away with a sketchbook full of fun/silly/cool/creative/messy drawings and a head full of ideas to implement back in the classroom.
